Fatal School Bus Accident in Hopkins County
Last month, two people died in an accident involving a head-on collision between a school bus and car on Highway 19. The driver of the mustang drove into the path of the Hopkins County school bus. You can continue driving if the bus is stopped on the opposite side of a road with a physical barrier between the directions.
- Never pass a stopped bus. Children may be getting on or off the bus and crossing the road. Passing a stopped bus increases the risk of hitting a child.
- Slow down and follow the posted speed limit when children are present. Many neighborhoods will have a slower speed limit posted for times when children are likely to be in the area. Be sure to keep a close watch for children and follow the speed limit, otherwise, you could be ticketed.
- Do not use a cell phone in a school crossing zone. It is illegal to use a cell phone in any elementary, middle, or junior high school designated crossing zone. When you are in school crossing zone you should only use a hands-free device. You may use your cell phone if you have come to a complete stop.
