Most Dangerous Roads and Intersections in Texas

 Posted on April 14, 2017 in Uncategorized

Texas is not known for its safe roads. In fact, it is becoming known for its car and pedestrian accidents that lead to far too many injuries and deaths. While the state has a bad reputation, certain highways, local roads, and intersections are more dangerous than others. Certain cities even have a disproportionate number of particularly dangerous roads and intersections.

Dangerous Texas Intersections

Using data from the Texas Department of Transportation, a Texas data visualization company found the 279 most dangerous intersections in Texas, each of which witnessed at least 48 crashes between 2012 and 2015. In addition to determining the number of crashes, injuries, and deaths at the intersections, the partnership developed a danger score for each intersection. The higher the danger score, the more dangerous the intersection.

The top 10 most dangerous intersections in Texas are:

  1. Bissonnet St and Sam Houston Pkwy in Houston, danger score of 1,124;
  2. Hardy Rd and Sam Houston Pkwy in Houston, danger score of 772;
  3. Sam Houston Pkwy and Westheimer Rd, danger score 752;
  4. IH 10 and Loop 1604 in San Antonio, danger score 681;
  5. Braun Rd and Loop 1604 in San Antonio, danger score 661;
  6. Main St and South Loop in Houston, danger score 657;
  7. Green Rd and IH 45 in Houston, danger score 644;
  8. Main St and Sam Houston Pkwy in Houston, danger score 638;
  9. Beechnut St and Sam Houston Pkwy in Houston, danger score 597; and
  10. Bandera Rd and Loop 1604 in San Antonio, danger score 542.

For reference, the least dangerous intersection on the list is Kostoryz Rd and S. Padre Island Dr in Corpus Christi, which had a danger score of only 84.

Cities with the Most Dangerous Intersections

It may seem obvious from the 10 most dangerous intersections, but Houston has the most dangerous intersections within the state with 82 in total. San Antonio was next with 36, followed by Dallas with 34, Lubbock with 26, and Plano with 10.

Deadly Highways in Texas

It is not only intersections that give Texas drivers trouble. In 2014, the Houston Chronicle and Houston Public Media News 88.7 investigated and published a series of reports on traffic accidents and fatalities within the state between 2010 and 2014. They found nearly 700 people were killed during this time, and one-third of fatalities occurred on the same 16 highways.

The most dangerous highways in Texas are:

  • Interstate 20;
  • U.S. Highway 59;
  • Interstate 10;
  • Interstate 30;
  • U.S. Highway 83;
