What Is the Role of a Black Box in a Truck Accident?

Posted on July 26, 2024 in Truck accidents

Gonzalez, TX truck accident lawyerWhen a plane crashes, one of the first things investigators will look at is the flight recorder. A flight recorder, also referred to as a "black box," records certain data about a flight that often helps explain why the plane crashed. These devices are built to be virtually indestructible so that they survive even fiery crashes.

Many trucks also come equipped with black boxes called electronic control modules (ECMs). ECMs are not actually black boxes, but computer chips that sit inside the truck’s engine. They are only called black boxes because they function similarly to the black boxes on planes (which, incidentally, are also not actual black boxes).

This article will discuss what an ECM does and the role it plays in a truck accident. If you or someone you know has been involved in a truck collision, contact a Texas truck accident attorney who will know how to make use of the truck’s black box.

What Does an ECM Do?

An ECM acts as the brain of an engine and has several functions. For example, it helps optimize the engine’s performance by maximizing fuel efficiency and regulating the engine’s power. It controls the power windows, entertainment systems, and air conditioning.

ECMs also monitor the vehicle’s operations and record data on the truck’s:

  • Speed

  • Use of clutch

  • Use of brakes

  • Airbag systems

  • Use of cruise control

  • Seatbelt use

  • Tire pressure

Certain rigs are also required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to have an electronic logging device (ELD) connected to the ECM. An ELD logs the number of driving hours to make sure the operator complies with FMCSA rules, which place a cap on how long a driver can operate a truck. For example, truck drivers are not allowed to drive for more than 11 consecutive hours and cannot operate their rigs after 14 hours of work, including any breaks and job-related tasks.

What Role Does an ECM Play in a Truck Accident?

An ECM can often serve as a treasure trove of evidence in a truck accident. It can tell investigators and your attorney important information, such as:

  • How fast the truck was going at the time of the collision

  • Whether the driver was wearing a seatbelt

  • Whether the driver applied the brakes

  • Whether airbags were deployed

Furthermore, the ECM can reveal whether or not the driver complied with FMCSA regulations. If the driver continued driving past the maximum number of hours, he or she may be responsible for driver fatigue.
