Where are the Safest City Drivers?

Posted on October 25, 2013 in Uncategorized

Allstate Insurance Co. recently released their annual Allstate America’s Best Drivers Report®. For the ninth year in a row, the company has taken the 200 largest cities in the country and ranked them by the frequency of car collisions in determining who is the safest.

According to figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), vehicle accident fatalities increased by more than 1700 victims from 2011 to 2012. This has been the first increase since 2005. Allstate’s own research reveals that 70 percent of vehicle accidents occur at low speeds of 35 m.p.h. or less.

For the third time in nine years, Fort Collins, Colo. has been the safest driving city on Allstate’s list. The number two spot went to Boise, Idaho, followed by Sioux Falls, S.D., Brownsville, Texas and Madison, Wis.

Phoenix, Ariz. held onto its number one spot – where it’s been for all nine year the report has been issued – topped the list of safest cities with over a million commuters. Their overall spot was number 71 on the list. The next four safest cities with over a million commuters were San Diego, Calif. (#121), San Antonio, Texas (#141), Chicago, Ill. (#150), and Houston, Texas (#151).

So which cities were in the bottom five? Glendale, Calif., Hialeah, Fla., Providence, R.I., Baltimore, M.D., and Washington D.C. ranked on the bottom of the report.

Allstate offers these safe driving tips when driving in large cities:

  • There are many situations that can come up on the road that can delay your arrival. Traffic jams, road construction, detours can slow things down, so plan for plenty of time to get to where you’re going.
  • Keep alert while driving. There’s lots of activity going on around you. Pay attention for pedestrians crossing, ambulances and other emergency vehicles, buses, taxis, other drivers parking their vehicles.
  • If you’re driving into an area your unfamiliar with, get directions before you start your trip. If you are lost, pull over into a safe area and recheck your directions or GPS to get back on track.

Sometimes, no matter how safely we are driving, car accidents occur through the fault of another driver. If you’ve been injured in a vehicle accident, contact a San Antonio personal injury attorney today to find out what civil action you may be able to take against the other driver.
